Volunteering!!

Category: Uncategorized | Date: Oct 31 2007 | By: admin

We are looking forward to first volunteer of the season Rachel who arrives tomorrow! She will be joined by another group towards the middle of November and there is plenty to keep us all busy as the whale shark season kicks off. I went diving today and although we were joined by a group of dolphins (always a bonus) - no whale sharks yet. Volunteers with our project live on our compound in a cottage called the Gatehouse. Their days are filled various jobs such as:

- carrying out whale shark surveys

- analysing sighting data

- making presentations in schools and hotels

- helping us in the fibre-glass turtle workshop

- making signboards and posters

- night watches for turtles and other marine life

- updating our website and blog

- helping with other awareness raising and fund raising initiatives

We depend a great deal on the good will of volunteers who kindly give us their time and experience. We live in a beautiful part of the world and can all but guarantee you an amazing time. The people are friendly, the weather is amazing and the beaches are breathtaking. Most of all though by volunteering you will be giving something back to the wonderful planet that we call home.

Hello,
Volunteering sounds like an amazing experience. I would not be a good volunteer for the whalesharks because I am completely ignorant when it comes to diving, and marine life in general (other then what I have seen on the Discovery channel :O). For others that are reading this and might be a better qualified volunteer…
How does one get involved in volunteering with the whalesharks?
~Mary

Hi Mary - anyone can be a volunteer! You don’t even have to know how to swim!! Some people help us even though they don’t want to get on a boat. There are so many things we do on land that everyone can get involved even children. If you want to, you can swim/snorkel with the whale sharks when we see them and it is possible to learn how to dive when you are here. So don’t say you wouldn’t be a good volunteer!! As per your query, in order to volunteer with us, you can visit our website http://www.giantsharks.org where there is more info on volunteering or you can email me direct info@giantsharks.org Thanks again for your kind support in reading our blog! Please keep it up!!!

Hi,
This is Jung from South Korea which is pretty far from your place. : )
I am a long-time whale lover although I have not had a chance to commit into saving and caring whales.
When I was a undergraduate student, I was offered to be a volunteer staff from whale museum in Iceland as a volunteer staff. However, I couldn’t at the end because their budget got shrunk.
Currently, I work at Buson-Marsteller, a leading global PR firm. Yet, I am still looking for a chance to work for what I believe and care.
I’d like to join your activitiy in next year, or the next next year.
Please let me know what kind of skill I need to help your association. Then, I will practice and prepare for it. In addition, I am sure that my work experience at PR firm will help your activity as well, since your activites have to be known and delivered to public.
Lastly, I have a diving licesene, it’s just open water though. : )

I look forward to hearing from you soon

With regards,
