KILIFI SHARK

Today Simon our resident volunteer has gone up to Kilifi to see if he can track down a tag that came ashore there. He doesn’t have a GPS because we were only borrowing the one we used last time but he is armed nonetheless with pretty accurate maps of the area and locations of the last known coordinates. This is his second attempt to find this tag as he went up to Kilifi at a few days ago but was unsuccessful.

We are wishing him all the best with his search.

Here he is holding the 2 tags we found last time -

Good luck, hope he finds them … but I wonder how he will – do the tags beep or something?

When the tag comes off the shark it transmits its position via the Argos satellite system. We are able to locate the tags accurately using GPS coordinates and Google Earth. The only thing is that the tag isn’t able to transmit forever because after about 2 weeks its battery dies. This one isn’t transmitting anymore – its batter died last week which is why it’s unlikely that we will find it using the coordinates. However we are sure that a fisherman has it because it went inland into a fishing village near Kilifi so we have put out our posters and will just have to wait and see. BTW have you got my email about the SCB?
